On Sunday, January 30, 2010 I met with a young gentleman to discuss his ideas for a commissioned painting. We completely lost track of time as our minds were both filled with so much inspiration. I left the meeting feeling honored that he had chosen me to create his vision.

Picking up supplies

Once I picked up all the supplies, I called my best friend to help me stretch the canvas.

Greer stretched the canvas while I stapled it.

Studio all set up with source images and inspiration.

First background layers applied.

Rough sketch of the Geisha.

First layers of the kimono applied. Slowly building up the detail in her face.

A little more detail has been added…

Time to put a design on her Kimono :)

Adding Cherry Blossoms to her kimono

Adding gold outline

Working on her hands

Added metallic sound last night

The young man who commissioned this piece suggested that I add some cherry blossoms!

I was so stoked to show him the finished piece. I did have full intentions of leaving her blue, however, the gentleman requested that I make her more pink toned. I was terrified! I was so afraid that I would mess it up somehow. I stared at the painting for hours until finally one day I just did it. I took a big swish of pink to the canvas and just painted.

I’m very happy with the finished piece and am relieved that he loves it as well!!

I love seeing your process, Donna. This is a beautiful painting and so fun to stretch your own canvas. I think doing the whole thing make the painting have soul! Have you considered being a part of artists for japan on facebook. I would love to have you there!
